Understanding the Graduated Licensing System in Ontario
Ontario follows a graduated licensing system to help new drivers gain experience before becoming fully licensed. This system includes three stages: G1, G2, and G licenses. This blog will explain each stage, the steps required, and how you can move safely through each.
Helpful Tips:
-
G1 License:
After passing the written test, you’ll be granted a G1 license, which comes with restrictions such as requiring a fully licensed driver with you at all times and no driving at night.
-
G2 License:
After holding your G1 for a year (8 months if you’ve completed driver education), you can take the G2 road test. This allows more freedom but still has some restrictions, like a lower alcohol limit.
-
Full G License:
After holding your G2 for at least 12 months, you can take the G road test, which, if passed, grants you full driving privileges.
